Wow
some of the answers here are really confusing and full of wrong information. It’s surprising how much misunderstanding there is about something that’s actually pretty simple.
First tip:
Don’t listen to anyone who mixes up the deep web and the dark web. If someone uses these terms like they mean the same thing, they don’t know what they’re talking about.
The deep web includes anything you can’t find on a search engine, like stuff you need to log in to see. Your Netflix list, Amazon orders, and bank account are all part of the deep web.
Second tip:
Don’t believe anyone who says the dark web was made by criminals or for illegal stuff. That’s totally wrong.
There’s more than one dark web. The three main ones are Tor, I2P, and Freenet, but there are others too.
Freenet
is one of the oldest darknets, starting in March 2000 at the University of Edinburgh. It was based on a research paper by Ian Clark in 1999. Freenet’s goal is to make a network that’s safe from censorship. It’s built on a system where each server only stores a small, encrypted part of a page, making it hard for anyone, even the government, to block information.
Today, Freenet is developed by The Freenet Project Inc., a non-profit that runs on public donations.
Tor
is the biggest dark web. It was created by the US government. The idea of a secure, anonymous network came from DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), and the first software was made at the Naval Research Laboratory.
Tor was first funded by the US State Department for two reasons: to allow secret communication during disasters and to help get information in and out of countries with strict internet censorship.
Today, Tor is developed by The Tor Project, a non-profit that’s supported by individual donors, Mozilla (the company behind Firefox), and several universities like Princeton and Harvard. The NSF and State Department still help fund it too.
