Dark Web Medication Head boss Sentenced to More than 10 Years for Selling Opiates and Washing Benefits Through Crypto latest news

The U.S. Attorney’s Office, Eastern District of Michigan announced that Victor Hernandez was sentenced to over 10 years in federal prison for his role in leading a conspiracy to sell drugs over the dark web and laundering the proceeds through cryptocurrency.

According to the announcement:

Hernandez pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to distribute illicit substances, conspiracy to launder monetary instruments, distribution of counterfeit pills, and use of firearms in furtherance of his crimes. He was sentenced to 130 months, or nearly 11 years, in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Linda V. Parker. As part of the sentence, Hernandez was ordered to forfeit the proceeds from his crimes, in the form of a $3.1 million money judgment.

Where he sold illegal drugs like cocaine as well as counterfeit pills designed to mimic common prescription medications like alprazolam but actually contained uncontrolled research chemicals. A multi-agency investigation uncovered Hernandez’s true identity and traced the seller to Detroit.

Execution of a search warrant at Hernandez’s Detroit home led to the discovery of a sophisticated drug lab capable of producing 20,000 pills per hour. Law enforcement also seized around 600 grams of cocaine, thousands of counterfeit pills, $340,000 in cash, and over $1 million in various cryptocurrencies. This suggests that Hernandez was operating at a large scale and laundering significant profits from his drug sales through digital currencies in an attempt to mask the illegal origins of the funds.

As the leader of the conspiracy, Hernandez recruited his sister Carolyn Hernandez-Taylor. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison earlier this year.

United States Attorney Dawn Ison

 Commended the successful investigation and prosecution, stating that criminals cannot hide behind anonymity on the dark web or through new technologies like cryptocurrency. The case was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces operation involving local, state, and federal cooperation to dismantle high-level trafficking networks.

Representatives from Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and IRS Criminal Investigation also praised the outcome. They emphasized ongoing commitment to disrupting all forms of drug distribution, including online marketplaces.
